An object lesson
|
|
It is the rainy season in Haiti which means lots of rain and some mighty thunder and lightning. On one recent evening, we had some wild and violent thunder and lightning. The girls reacted like many small children do when the house shakes with a monstrous shock of thunder (screeching, squealing, hiding heads and even some tears). Some discussion led us to the root of the fear in some of the older girls: lightning brings fire, fire burns down houses, no house means no ANYTHING. We explained that HOPE is pretty big and made of concrete and we felt pretty safe that the house wouldn’t burn down. Our arguments were having little effect so we decided a little object lesson was in order. The next day, we stuffed a bunch of paper, sticks and other combustible items inside some cement blocks and let them on fire. The girls stood around and noticed that while the paper and sticks burned, the cement did not. They decided that they would probably be safe in our house when there was a storm. Plus, we have Jesus too.
