Kids are kids, everywhere...

Posted by on Monday, May 18, 2009 (EST)

The best toy is a big box
Many children in Haiti lack food and clothing-toys are rare, unless the kids themselves make them.  We see cars made from plastic bottles with four lids as wheels; kites made from plastic bags with string which is actually strands of nylon tied together after being unraveled from 110 pound bags of sugar; even little dolls made from action figures and sticks.  I am encouraged when I see children taking a few moments to be kids.
The girls at HOPE are blessed with toys, but like many kids, they enjoy the packaging materials just as much as the toys themselves.
We recently had occasion to purchase a washing machine at HOPE.  It came in a giant box.  The girls quickly appropriated the box and turned it into a car, a bus, an airplane, a cave, a secret hide-out, a fancy salon and a small house for any manner of dogs, cats, goats and pigs (all acted out with abandon, complete with animal chatter by the little girls).  What fun to watch them use their imaginations to create wonderful toys from a simple cardboard box.
